I'm So happy I discovered this book. I was at a bookstore and saw it on the shelves, looking very innocent and tempting. WELL, this is a great book! And the author is new so there are more books from Ms. Kabak on my list to be sure. I just hope she writes fast enough for me to devour them. Okay, back to the book. What a wonderful read. I won't repeat every detail or give anything away, but this novel took me back to my past and made me rethink so many things that had happened to me in terms of my relationships, especially with my own mother and ex-husband. It's the kind of novel where you say to yourself: Yes, I am that woman. That was me. And you feel Katie Cadogan's (the protagonist) embarassments, frustrations, joys and awkward moments as she journeys back to her teen years, then through all the incidents (some horrifying) in her life that brought her to where she is now, and where she ends up: a completely independent woman who knows what she wants and makes decisions based not on other's needs and demands--not anymore--but on her own. Read this novel. Buy it. It's a very special, beautifully written book.

Over the course of two decades we watch the unraveling of Kate's talents and interests by her selfish, passive-aggressive mother and mealy-mouthed father, and then by her athletic husband who shows not one ounce of feeling for her, except for messily wolfing down her carefully prepared meals and playing 'Sergeant Major' with her in the bedroom for 30 seconds on Saturday nights. Will Kate EVER stick up for herself, follow HER dreams and start a new life on her terms or is she so beaten down by the people who are supposed to love and support her that she can't? I loved this story.
I can't believe this excellent book doesn't have more reviews! I LOVED this book with its cast of characters. Kate finally gets to the point where she is at the age, and something recently has happened, where she can pause and take stock of her life and how she got to where she is today. She begins the story in the present time, where her son has just had his party, then goes back to Kate's growing up years, where we can really see her overbearing, manipulative mother and how Kate is treated, then back again to her current situation.

This book came at a time in my life where I am ready to look deeply at my life, and so many of Kate's issues were what I have dealt with too, so this book spoke to me a lot. I think almost every woman whose kids are grown and are wondering what to do next and/or take stock of their life will really enjoy this book. I wish I had bought this instead of gotten it from the library because there were a few things I wanted to underline and re-read.

The only thing that brought it down a half star for me was the way the author writes conversations sometimes. I'll get to reading something with no quotation marks, then have to go back because I realize it was a conversation, not just Kate thinking in her head. I don't know what this style of writing is called-where sometimes quotation marks are used to indicate someone saying something, and the other times leaving them out-but I'm not a fan. But the story is wonderful!
Carrie Kabak does a beautiful job of telling a deep, compelling story in an accessible style. It's rare to find a book that is both meaningful and a delight to read.
This is a super funny read from start to finish. It was recommended by a new friend as being relateable and amusing and it absolutely delivered. I have shared it with others too because it truly entertains. I found myself truly laughing out loud.
I loved this book. I finished it a few months ago, and I still think about the characters, the story, and the wonderful style of writing. Sometimes, books about a character's personal struggles can feel plodding to me. I like books that give me a lot to think about but still keep me turning those pages. Ms. Kabek manages to do both in Cover the Butter. It's excellent.
I absolutely loved this book! I listened to the audio version. It was unabridged, and 10 wonderful hours of listening to narrator Kate Reading who really did "perform." She used different voices for each character, and has the most delightful British accent. She also knows how to speak in "American" as well as Welsh and French. I came to really care about the main character, Kate, and felt I knew her well. Very good book, one of the best of the year so far! Refreshing!
I agree with other reviewers -- enjoyable, small-scale novel, especially good in creating a sense of the expectations faced by a middle-class British woman born in the early 1950s.

However, the editorial description of the book is misleading. (Not the author's fault, I suspect.) The book isn't really "set in Wales" in any sense that matters. Yes, the Welsh grandparents come into the story occasionally, complete with bits of Welsh language, and the main character moves to Cardiff -- but there's basically no local color or sense of place, so if you're looking for a novel "about" or "set in" Wales, this isn't it.
